Sri Lanka to hold presidential election on November 16

COLOMBO | Thursday Septeber 19, 2019 | NewsLanka | by Claude Gunasekera | Presidential Elections will be held on Noember 16 this year, based on gazette notification (2141/25), the Chairman of the Sri Lanka National Elections Commission annonced. The National Elections Commission will accept deposits till 12 noon on October 6 and begin nominations from 9 am – 11 am on October 7. This is the 8th presidential election. The incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena’s term of office will end on 9 January 2020, however he is eligible to run for a second term.

SLPP has announced Gotabaya Rajapaksa as their presidential candidate while JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake is also set to contest the poll through the National People’s Power Movement. The UNP and the SLFP candidates are yet to be announced.  

The Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka will see that after this election more executive power will be vested in the office of the Prime Minister.
